A Respite From The Unhealthy

With all the goat cheese, eggs, hog  jowls, cakes, and burgers of late, I think it’s time I got out a little more of the bikini season friendly fare.  I have been indulging a bit lately with the excuse of graduations, birthdays, and just plain great barbecue days, but now we need to get into the more healthy fruits and vegetables again (honest, we did pick up more than just hog jowls at the farmer’s market over the weekend).

This morning I was thinking about my last post on burgers.  I think I still came up with a tastier and more nutritious option for burgers and fries, using leaner and better beef, better bread, fresh cheese and vegetables than the fast food joints.  So for breakfast I wanted to out do another fast food menu item; oatmeal.

Their version of oatmeal claims to be 290 (I don’t think that includes the brown sugar and cream they add) calories, and contains about 11 other weird ingredients you don’t see.  The bowls my daughter and I just enjoyed was only about 180 calories and used all the ingredients you see in the pictures.  There were oats, water, blue berries, strawberries, grapes, and blackberries I just picked from out in the backyard.  I topped each bowl with about a teaspoon of honey, and a dash of good cinnamon.  It was a good honest breakfast and took about 5 minutes start to finish which included picking the blackberries while the oatmeal cooked.

A little note about cooking the oats:  Use a tall sided bowl or you will have oatmeal all over the bottom of the microwave.  I used 2/3 cup oats to 1 cup water and microwaved on high for 2 minutes.

That should do a refreshing and delicious breakfast for anyone. I eat instant oats with apple and cinnamon in the morning generally, and as far as fruit I split 1/2 &1/2 a banana with my wife, a bagel with butter (Vegetable) orange juice and of course coffee with a dash of half & half.
Tomorrow I’ll be buying more fruit so we can experiment more like you do. Thanks Diva! You’re ok! 🙂

  2. I was compelled to eat healthy today. I gave blood at the Red Cross and wanted to donate blood that had some good stuff in it. I also get the benefit of checking my vital signs and iron…all are good! 🙂 Hope all continues to go well with you and your family

  3. Oh.. that cinnamon is an excellent idea.. I usually do a 1/3 to 2/3 version myself.. with quick oats so it doesn’t boil over a regular bowl. I’m adding the cinnamon tomorrow:) Thanks!!

    • If you can get access to Penzey’s it is naturally sweet cinnamon…it’s really the best. My sister turned me on to it. Crazy good!
