100_8619Here is a fun and different way to enjoy your fruit.  I was browsing one of those idea board sites and saw this cute way to make a piece of citrus  fruit into an oil lamp…yes fruit can make light if you want it to!

I have a rather large refrigerator that is almost always stuffed to the gills.  Often things get pushed back on the bottom shelf …way back behind the pickles where I can’t see them.   This yucky looking grapefruit was one of several, shall we say, “science 100_8621projects” I found while cleaning everything out the other day.    It was too irresistible to not try the lamp idea out on this poor shriveled up thing I was 100_8622going to pitch in the trash anyway.  After all, it did have a good side to it, so I cut it in half and started working on it.

All I did was carefully remove the segments, first with a knife around the perimeter (without piercing the skin), then with a spoon removing the pulp just as if I were preparing it to eat.  The 100_8623important part was to leave as much of the core as possible…that white filament of cellulose in the center of all citrus fruits.  That became the wick.  Even just a stump of it was enough to light the oil I poured into my new citrus cup candle.

Let your light show ugly grapefruit!  I was de-lighted at how well it worked!  It burned for hours on a sturdy glass plate out on the patio table, and gave off such a cheery glow.  We couldn’t help basking in it for quite a while.  I could picture several kinds of fruit used this way, with different colors of lime, lemon, and orange at a party we could have this summer.  I liked this idea very much.  Some words of caution though:  Never leave a burning candle unattended or around small children and pets.  Keep a good eye on the level of oil…if it gets too low it could catch the cup on fire so always put your candle on something substantial enough to prevent spilling and/or high heat transfer.  100_8626
